Chuggy, my little ole home system, is doing hisser best but I can tell it's last legs time... So I'm planning on getting a new system in the fall and therein lies the rub! I'm not a neo-luddite, but I'm farfarfar from a techwiz - and reading
NB1 -
NB2 - I'm a quick learner, so a new OS shouldn't scare me at all
NB3 - I want something mighty and fast that will add scare to my enemies and pleasure to my harem
So, there you go - thoughts? I seek the advice of mes amis on LJ - talk to me folks! Should I give money to Steve J and his peeps? Or should it stay with Big Blue et al? What kinda system should I get in either case?
I'm a Libra, we're easily influenced.

But should I wait for v2 of the intel? If I do, that'll be quite some time and I don't know if poor Chuggy can make it! Is there an interim solution while I wait for Intel?
These are the things that keep me up at night. That, and now I can add imagining your 'coffee' ;)

Re: yeah mac!
Yeah, furryface showed me the little minimacs and I think I like em! They're in the lead at the moment, unless one of my PC friends shows me something shinier, faster and more powerful! What do you have?July 18 2005, 15:13:07 UTC 6 years ago
Re: yeah mac!
You will never find a shinier or prettier PC than a Mac. Never. Some of them (very few, though) look all fancy at first, but within a couple months you realize it was all a fad. Macs have lasting style. As for power, Macs are fairly powerful, although maybe not quite as powerful as certain PCs. You have to look beyond the big, bold-faced specs though, because lots of low-end PCs have super-fast processors, but their guts are too slow to keep the processor busy. If you want a well-made, well-balanced PC, you'll end up spending around as much as a Mac costs. Besides, there's more to a computer than sheer power: There's the experience as a whole. A PC is a tool you just use. A Mac is something you actually enjoy.
What, me? Biased? Surely you jest. ;)

Re: yeah mac!
nope, I think it's too small for me, as in not powerful enough. The iMac or the PowerMac or even a laptop are winning now. It's hell being a Libra, I'm easily influenced!
No objections to a bias as long as it's clearly stated - and you're clear all right ;)

Some tips:
- The Mac mini (note: "mini" is lower-case and AFTER "Mac", just like "iPod mini" and "iPod shuffle"... people are always saying it wrong) is cute as fuck, but it's certainly a low-end Mac. Very low end. If you're looking for power, this isn't the one for you. OTOH, if you're just looking for "more powerful than what I've got now", and you expect to buy something new in a year or two, go for it.
- The iMac G5 is sexy as hell, and is decently powerful. It'll keep you occupied for awhile
- If you want ultimate power, go for the PowerMac... but to be honest, I can't really recommend going this route unless you've got money to burn (in which case there's a cute Winnipegger who'd love to help you spend it...) because it costs a lot. OTOH, it is wickedly fast, and will let you fly through video and sound editing, or anything else mega-hardcore you want to do. I don't know if you're really in the market for that kind of power, though.

As luck would have it I have two product sheets in front of me - one for the PowerMac G5 and one for the iMac! Ryan and I hit a store on the weekend :)
I'm not using it for any design work or anything - just regular files and fun. I'm tempted by the PowerMac just because I can afford it and I like power a lot, but I don't know if I need it. I could live with a sexy little iMac. I'm also thinking laptops - is there one I should see or just stick to desktops?

Honestly, my next computer is gonna be a laptop. While they aren't quite as powerful, and their ergonomics aren't quite as good, they're just so convenient. You have no idea how often I think "I wish I had a laptop". Take a peek at both the iBook (low-end) and PowerBook (high-end) lines.
One thing to note is that, according to speculation, the laptops (or at the very least the PowerBooks) will likely be the first Macs to make the transition to Intel. But you know what? I think most people are making too big of deal of that. It's not like your old Mac will stop working after the transition, and if it's good for you right now, that's all that matters.
