to mac or not to mac...

So, it's like this...

Chuggy, my little ole home system, is doing hisser best but I can tell it's last legs time... So I'm planning on getting a new system in the fall and therein lies the rub! I'm not a neo-luddite, but I'm farfarfar from a techwiz - and reading [info]trachalio's posts on the fun of mac is like giving a magpie a shiny thing. I'm leaning to mac! Used to work for TBWA\ where it's mac only (Apple is one of their major clients) and loved it then, but have had PC at home forever and a day - I'm fine with both! But SHINY things...

NB1 - [info]furrytoe says to hold off until the new something comes out in a few years.
NB2 - I'm a quick learner, so a new OS shouldn't scare me at all
NB3 - I want something mighty and fast that will add scare to my enemies and pleasure to my harem

So, there you go - thoughts? I seek the advice of mes amis on LJ - talk to me folks! Should I give money to Steve J and his peeps? Or should it stay with Big Blue et al? What kinda system should I get in either case?

I'm a Libra, we're easily influenced.

Well the new Intel based macs are supposedly coming out next year and they're wicked fast... I'll be completely jealous :P

But with your fancey pancey new job you can afford to get a mac mini every month and then just give 'em to me and [Unknown LJ tag] when they're too old for you ;)

I think that's why [info]furrytoe is saying to wait, for the new intel ones. But will it be buggy? Wicked fast works for me, I'm getting impatient in my advanced years.

Pfft! to giving away mac minis! That's just crazy talk! I'll gut them and put in some siamese fighting fish - name one for you and one for [Unknown LJ tag] too! Cuz that's just the kind of guy I am!

If you can whup [info]iposthuman & [info]furrytoe there might be a kitchenaid stand mixer in it for ya when I get the new one though

Oh, what's a mac mini anyhow?

I'm actually in the market for a Mac, too, and everyone I've talked to says to hold off until the Intel-based machines debut. I'm taking their advice.

But we should really discuss this in my bed over coffee.

yep, just got a note from the Winnipeg hottentot [info]trachalio saying the same thing (about the Intel ones, not the bed part! And yes please to the bedfun - coffee can come after we do)

But should I wait for v2 of the intel? If I do, that'll be quite some time and I don't know if poor Chuggy can make it! Is there an interim solution while I wait for Intel?

These are the things that keep me up at night. That, and now I can add imagining your 'coffee' ;)

There's also the option of getting a cheap used mac.
try here:
cpused.com

that should be an affordable inbetween and WAY faster than what you have now

or a mini mac

Get a mac. New Intel based machines should probably start to show in January 2006. Exisiting machines are still pretty fast though.

Re: yeah mac!

Yeah, furryface showed me the little minimacs and I think I like em! They're in the lead at the moment, unless one of my PC friends shows me something shinier, faster and more powerful! What do you have?

Re: yeah mac!

You will never find a shinier or prettier PC than a Mac. Never. Some of them (very few, though) look all fancy at first, but within a couple months you realize it was all a fad. Macs have lasting style.

As for power, Macs are fairly powerful, although maybe not quite as powerful as certain PCs. You have to look beyond the big, bold-faced specs though, because lots of low-end PCs have super-fast processors, but their guts are too slow to keep the processor busy. If you want a well-made, well-balanced PC, you'll end up spending around as much as a Mac costs. Besides, there's more to a computer than sheer power: There's the experience as a whole. A PC is a tool you just use. A Mac is something you actually enjoy.

What, me? Biased? Surely you jest. ;)

Re: yeah mac!

nope, I think it's too small for me, as in not powerful enough. The iMac or the PowerMac or even a laptop are winning now.

It's hell being a Libra, I'm easily influenced!

No objections to a bias as long as it's clearly stated - and you're clear all right ;)

I say "to hell" with waiting. First off, you have to wait about a year for the very first Intel-based Macs to start coming, and who knows which lines those will be (there are theories everywhere, but no one actually knows). If you're in the market for one of the lines that's getting updated later, that's a two-year wait. And if you want to wait until v2? Oh my god, that's a long time. Hell, if you bought a Mac now, you might almost be in the market for a new computer already by the time v2 of the Intel Mac you want is released. I say that if you're ready to buy now, you should go ahead.

Some tips:
- The Mac mini (note: "mini" is lower-case and AFTER "Mac", just like "iPod mini" and "iPod shuffle"... people are always saying it wrong) is cute as fuck, but it's certainly a low-end Mac. Very low end. If you're looking for power, this isn't the one for you. OTOH, if you're just looking for "more powerful than what I've got now", and you expect to buy something new in a year or two, go for it.
- The iMac G5 is sexy as hell, and is decently powerful. It'll keep you occupied for awhile
- If you want ultimate power, go for the PowerMac... but to be honest, I can't really recommend going this route unless you've got money to burn (in which case there's a cute Winnipegger who'd love to help you spend it...) because it costs a lot. OTOH, it is wickedly fast, and will let you fly through video and sound editing, or anything else mega-hardcore you want to do. I don't know if you're really in the market for that kind of power, though.

Oh dear, I did like the Mac mini (please note my learning curve), but mainly because it was shiny as hell... I won't be buying until around September, btw

As luck would have it I have two product sheets in front of me - one for the PowerMac G5 and one for the iMac! Ryan and I hit a store on the weekend :)

I'm not using it for any design work or anything - just regular files and fun. I'm tempted by the PowerMac just because I can afford it and I like power a lot, but I don't know if I need it. I could live with a sexy little iMac. I'm also thinking laptops - is there one I should see or just stick to desktops?

Fucking anonymous feature. how do I turn that off. That was me above...

Honestly, unless you're doing crazy-heavy work, you probably don't need the PowerMac. Sure, you'll have bragging rights, but it will probably be mostly wasted. Plus, while the PowerMac is sexy in a big, boxy way, the iMac is just plain sexy.

Honestly, my next computer is gonna be a laptop. While they aren't quite as powerful, and their ergonomics aren't quite as good, they're just so convenient. You have no idea how often I think "I wish I had a laptop". Take a peek at both the iBook (low-end) and PowerBook (high-end) lines.

One thing to note is that, according to speculation, the laptops (or at the very least the PowerBooks) will likely be the first Macs to make the transition to Intel. But you know what? I think most people are making too big of deal of that. It's not like your old Mac will stop working after the transition, and if it's good for you right now, that's all that matters.
